And so the people of the Ax have settles in the fens of Albion, exchanging flint weapons for farm implements, trading the ways of the warrior for the path of peace. But prosperity has not followed on the heels of their decision, and many in the clan urge their lord to become the Wolf once more. Or threaten to rise up against him.It is Fomor's firstborn son, Balor, headstrong, and defiant, who receives the sign of the gods that the time of the Wolf is at hand-as the cruel Nemed and his raiders sail toward Albion's shores to wipe the clan MacLir from the face of the earth.
And it is Balor who will take up the forbidden sword Retaliator to avenge the past. I very much enjoyed reading this novel! It was strangely calming to become engaged in the lives stone age clan culture. I loved the main character, Baylor, the first-born son of the chieftain. The ending was generally predictable, but it still held surprises. I wish there were a sequel as some questions we are left to ponder. The authors notes at the end of the book says the novel was drawn from lore and prehistory of Ireland, Scandinavia and British Isles.
He states that Balor was a real man as are Stonehenge and the Viking raids. Who is to deny the power of prophecy, destiny and the Mighty One? For a fiction novel written 30 years ago, it taught me a lot.
I enjoyed this book because of its good theme. Novels set in preroman Britain are rare.
Although Sarabande conjures a rather generic vision of tribal history, the atmosphere is very saturated. The book is quite brutal and sexual, something I enjoyed and which sets the book apart from your usual pseudo-historic fluffy novel. The story takes a while to build up, but unfortunately as the climax approaches, Sarabande takes a crucial detour from the main arc and the story develops in a completely different direction. However, it feels utterly disjointed and pointless and I was annoyed that the climax and main arc was postponed in such a fashion, which ultimately resulted in me losing interest. Overall, the book had good potential, but the last quarter of it is terribly chaotic and disossciative.
Sarabande uses many 'oversimplified' techniques to convey meaning to his story, such as dreams and visions, something I despise in storytelling. The ending is a tad inconclusive and bland.
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War delivers a level of visual detail never before seen in an RTS. Hundreds of units clash on the battlefields of the dark future, unleashing massive destruction through a stunning battery of long-range weaponry before closing in for the finish.
Incredible kill animations bring science fiction combat to life like never before, and the gritty future-gothic Warhammer 40,000 setting provides a striking tableau for the chaos and carnage of this grim, dark future, where there is only war! The manner in which such laurels are won and recounted amongst the Space Wolves is very different to how such things are achieved amongst other Chapters. The Space Wolves are savage and proud, and they seek glory in all they do. Some, especially the, regard the Sons of Russ as braggarts and gloryhounds, finding their methods crude and their desire to make a name for themselves vainglorious.
